Meet Abbey Macklin, a beginner who just went for it
Every January, people across Bloomington make promises to themselves: to get in shape, try something new, or finally start that thing they’ve been putting off.
But what if you didn’t wait for “someday”? What if you took that step now?
That’s exactly what Abbey Macklin did. At 28 years old, she decided she was done letting hesitation hold her back. She didn’t have years of athletic experience or a background in martial arts, just a desire to challenge herself and rediscover confidence through movement.
Abbey wanted to share her story in her own words in hopes that it inspires someone else who might be sitting where she once was: curious, nervous, but ready for change. Here’s her letter.
A beginner’s journey
By Abbey Macklin
Since I was a kid, the idea of physically defending myself was exciting. To be fierce and capable seemed incredible but no longer within reach. I’m a 28 year-old woman whose only athletic exposure was organized sports in high school. It felt like I had missed my opportunity.
But in January, I was seized with the “new year, new you” mentality. I was going to ignore my age and lack of experience and finally learn a martial art. I found Fusion Martial Arts’ adult Muay Thai Kickboxing class, a place where I could learn without being thrown into the ring right away. Their belt system allows students to measure their progress and develop a timeline to reach their goals. So, I pushed past my fear and signed up for a trial class at Fusion.
It wasn’t easy; learning a new physical skill not as a kid but as a 28-year-old woman. Many of the students were younger or more experienced. I was nervous, worried that I looked stupid or slowed everyone down. But I reminded myself that I had to look like a fool first if I ever wanted to learn.

To my relief, the instructors were welcoming and patient. I came back over and over until the moves started to feel more natural, the concepts clicking into place. I was surprised to find that while I was building these skills, I was enjoying myself. Fusion offered more than just a class; it offered a community of like-minded people that have made my journey more special than I could have imagined.
Last week, I earned my gray belt, the third belt you can earn in the adult class. I’m by no means a master yet, but I am stronger and more knowledgeable. My friends have noticed changes; I hold myself differently, walk differently. I have something I look forward to every day. Most importantly, I’m empowered and have more confidence in my ability to defend myself if the situation ever occurred.
It’s never too early or too late to learn a new skill and start becoming a stronger, more capable version of yourself. Sign up now for your free trial class or reach out with questions!
